Vlad II of Wallachia is the son of Vlad I. Dracula, the surname of Vlad II means “son of Dracul.” Dracul translates in Romanian as “the dragon.” Vlad II (a.k.a. Vlad the Impaler) joined the Order of the Dragon in c.1431 as a means to defend the Christian religion from the Turks.
Vlad II is notorious for being unnecessarily brutal with a lust for bloodshed (hence the fictional character), however, what most people don’t understand, is that his people were constantly under vicious attack by the Turks, whose cruelty knew no bounds.
